Chapter 4 - The First Client

The coastal breeze rattled the windowpanes of the Haven Ledger office, carrying the faint scent of salt and rain. I sat at my desk, tracing the pale, raised scar tissue across my palm, listening to the rhythmic ticking of the wall clock.

The door chimed, and a woman stepped inside. She was trembling, clutching a leather purse against her chest like a shield. She wore a heavy coat despite the mild summer weather, her eyes darting nervously toward the corners of the room as if expecting someone to jump out from the shadows.

"Are you the one they call the auditor?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

I stood up slowly, offering a warm, unassuming smile. "My name is Anna. I run this foundation. You must be Elena. Chloe called and told me you were coming."

Elena nodded, taking a tentative step into the room. She sank into the armchair opposite my desk. "The detective said you could help me. She said you understand what it’s like when they use money as a weapon. My husband, Julian... he’s drained the college funds. He took my name off the deed to our home. He told me if I leave, I’ll be on the streets, and he’ll make sure I never see my daughters again."

I poured her a cup of chamomile tea and slid it across the desk. The fear radiating from her was suffocatingly familiar. It was the exact same terror Dominic used to cultivate in me.

"Elena, listen to me very carefully," I said, leaning forward. "Abusers like Julian rely on the illusion of absolute control. They want you to believe their financial walls are impenetrable. But money always leaves a digital footprint. It leaves a ledger. And I know exactly how to read it."

"He’s very powerful, Anna," she whispered, a tear slipping down her bruised cheek. "He has lawyers. He has connections."

"So do I," I replied, my voice steady and cold. "We are going to mirror his accounts, track the shell transfers, and build a fortress around your remaining assets. By the time he realizes what is happening, his money will be frozen, and you will be miles out of his reach. You are not going to lose your daughters."

Just then, Chloe walked through the back door of the office, holding a stack of manila folders. "I pulled the preliminary tax filings for Julian’s company," Chloe announced, dropping the files on my desk. "Let's see what this bastard is hiding."

I looked at Elena. "Ready to take your life back?"

She took a deep breath, her hands finally stopping their tremble. "Yes. Let's do it."
