Chapter 36 - The Media Leak

The execution of the media leak was a masterclass in controlled chaos. We didn't go to the local news stations; they were too easily intimidated by Senator Hastings’ political machine. Instead, Chloe utilized a secure, anonymous drop to forward a heavily redacted, three-page excerpt of the ledger to an independent, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist in Washington D.C.

The excerpt we chose was devastating but localized. It showed a direct, handwritten record of Hastings accepting a five-million-dollar bribe to kill a bipartisan environmental protection bill, routing the money through the exact same offshore shell company he used to hide Clara’s stolen trust fund.

On Thursday morning, the story broke.

I was sitting in my office, watching the national news networks on the wall monitors. The headline flashed in bright red letters: BOMBSHELL LEAK IMPLICATES SENATOR HASTINGS IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR OFFSHORE BRIBERY SCANDAL.

The political fallout was instantaneous. Within an hour, reporters swarmed the Capitol building. Hastings’ press secretary released a frantic, furious statement vehemently denying the allegations, calling the leaked documents "a fabricated, malicious political hit job."

Arthur walked into my office, carrying a cup of coffee and a satisfied smirk. "The Senator is currently having a spectacular meltdown on national television. His lawyers are demanding the journalist reveal their source, claiming the documents are forged."

"Let them claim forgery," I said smoothly, leaning back in my chair. "They are playing right into our hands. The moment he publicly denies the existence of the ledger on the congressional floor, he commits perjury. And that is when we drop the entire book."

My secure phone rang. It was Clara Hastings, calling from our coastal safe house.

"Anna," Clara breathed, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and awe. "I am watching the news. Is it happening? Is it really happening?"

"It is happening, Clara," I promised her, my voice warm and steady. "He is trapped. He just doesn't realize the cage is locked yet. Stay off the internet, do not answer any unknown numbers, and trust the process. By the end of this week, you will be a free woman."

I hung up the phone and looked at the television screen. Senator Hastings was standing at a podium, his face red with indignation, shaking his finger at the press corps as he denied the allegations. He looked exactly like Dominic did the night he tried to burn my hand—arrogant, terrified, and violently desperate to maintain control.

The fire was catching. And I was standing comfortably outside the flames, holding the only extinguisher.
