Chapter 39 - The Hearing

The grand hearing room of the Senate Ethics Committee was a theatre designed to intimidate. Massive marble columns, high vaulted ceilings, and a raised dais where the senators sat looking down like royalty. The room was packed with journalists, cameras, and political aides.

I sat at the witness table alone, wearing a stark white suit. Sophia and Arthur sat directly behind me. I placed a thick, black leather binder on the table—a replica of the ledger we had stolen.

Senator Hastings sat at the defense table to my right, flanked by a team of expensive lawyers. He looked incredibly smug, confident that his allies on the committee were about to publicly execute my reputation.

The Chairman of the committee, a staunch ally of Hastings, slammed his gavel.

"Ms. Lawson," the Chairman began, his voice dripping with condescension. "You have made spectacular, ruinous claims against a sitting member of this body. You claim to possess a 'black book' detailing massive offshore corruption. Yet, your own background reveals a history of emotional instability and bitter domestic disputes. Why should this committee believe a word you say?"

The trap was sprung. The cameras zoomed in on my face, waiting for me to crack, to get angry, to prove their narrative of the "hysterical woman."

I leaned into the microphone. I did not raise my voice. I spoke with the icy, terrifying calm of absolute certainty.

"You should not believe a word I say, Senator," I replied smoothly.

A ripple of confusion ran through the room. Hastings smirked, thinking I was conceding.

"You should believe the math," I continued, opening the black binder. "You claim my evidence is a forgery. But a forgery cannot manufacture corresponding global bank records. Let me direct your attention to Exhibit A."

I held up a poster-sized printout of a bank transfer.

"On August 14th, five million dollars was transferred from a corporate lobbying PAC into an offshore account named Aegis Vanguard. Exactly twenty minutes later, a localized IP address registered to Senator Hastings' private office authorized a transfer of that exact amount into a Swiss holding trust. I have provided the committee with the SWIFT tracking codes, the routing numbers, and the digital signatures. This is not an allegation. It is a verifiable, internationally recognized financial transaction."

The Chairman sputtered, looking down at the documents his aides had just handed him.

"And furthermore," I pushed forward, turning my gaze directly toward Hastings, who was suddenly looking very pale. "This ledger details not just political bribery, but the systematic, illegal liquidation of his wife’s pre-marital trust fund. He used the stolen money from Clara Hastings to fund the very bribes this committee is currently attempting to cover up."

The courtroom erupted into chaotic shouting. The flashbulbs of the cameras exploded like strobe lights. The Chairman slammed his gavel repeatedly, but the damage was done. The math was indisputable, and I had just detonated it on live television.
