Chapter 30 - The Hidden Ledger

I returned to the Haven Ledger headquarters with Dominic’s intel burning a hole in my mind. I immediately convened a meeting with Chloe and Sophia in the secure war room.

"The old Federal Reserve building," Chloe mused, pulling up architectural blueprints on the massive digital whiteboard. "It was decommissioned in the late nineties and supposedly converted into luxury commercial space. But there are rumors in the private security sector about a subterranean vault that was never fully deactivated. The 'Ghost Vault.' It's entirely off the grid."

"If Hastings is keeping a physical ledger of his bribes and offshore networks there, it’s because it’s the only place digital subpoenas can't reach," Sophia added, pacing the room. "We can't get a warrant for an unregistered vault. Any judge we approach will be in Hastings' pocket, and he’ll move the ledger before the ink is dry."

"Which means we have to acquire it ourselves," I said, tracing the subterranean access routes on the blueprint.

Sophia stopped pacing and stared at me. "Anna, you are talking about breaking into a highly secure, heavily armed private vault. That is a federal crime."

"We aren't breaking in," I corrected, a dangerous smile touching my lips. "We are going to be invited in. Chloe, who manages the security for the commercial spaces above the Ghost Vault?"

Chloe’s fingers flew across her keyboard. "A private firm. Vanguard Defense. They handle high-end corporate security for the entire block."

"Perfect," I said, my plan crystallizing. "Vanguard Defense relies on digital infrastructure to monitor their biometric systems. If their primary servers experience a catastrophic, rolling failure, they will have to initiate an emergency manual reboot from the subterranean terminal room. A room located directly adjacent to the vault."

"You want me to hack Vanguard's security grid?" Chloe asked, her eyes widening.

"No, I want you to crash it," I replied, turning to face them. "We create a total system blackout. While their guards are scrambling to secure the perimeter and reboot the systems, I slip into the subterranean level. The biometric locks on the vault default to a localized emergency power grid during a blackout. They revert from remote encryption to standard digital keypads."

"And you can crack a standard keypad?" Sophia asked nervously.

"I am an auditor," I stated, holding up my scarred hand. "I break numbers for a living. A localized keypad is just a mathematical puzzle. We are going to walk into the Senator's fortress, take his black book, and walk out before the lights even come back on."

The room fell silent. It was incredibly dangerous, highly illegal, and utterly necessary. We were no longer just fighting financial abuse; we were taking down the cartel that enabled it.

"I'll prep the EMP software," Chloe said with a fierce grin. "Let's go rob a Senator."
