Chapter 24 - The Morning Tide

The morning sun crested over the Atlantic, casting a brilliant array of golds and pinks across the water. I stood on the deck of my coastal home with a mug of black coffee, breathing in the salt air. The profound peace I had felt the night before remained entirely intact. For the first time in years, the start of a new week did not bring a crushing wave of anxiety. It brought purpose.
I arrived at the Haven Ledger office just before eight. The space was already buzzing with quiet, determined energy. Our foundation had expanded dramatically over the past year. We now occupied an entire floor of a modern commercial building, equipped with state-of-the-art encrypted servers and a security detail that Chloe managed with ruthless efficiency. I walked past the glass-walled conference rooms, offering smiles to our team of forensic accountants, paralegals, and social workers.
"Anna," Chloe said, stepping out of her office as soon as she saw me. She handed me a thick, unmarked manila folder. "We have a walk-in. She bypassed the standard intake protocols. She specifically asked for the Auditor. She refused to give her real name to the receptionist, but the moment I saw her face on the security feed, I brought her straight to the secure room."
"Who is she?" I asked, taking the folder.
"Her name is Clara Hastings," Chloe replied, her voice dropping to a low, serious register. "She is the wife of United States Senator Robert Hastings. The man who is currently spearheading the federal committee on banking deregulation."
I stopped in my tracks, looking down at the folder. Senator Hastings was a titan in Washington, a man whose public persona was built on traditional family values and fiscal responsibility. He was practically untouchable, protected by layers of political armor and generational wealth.
"If Senator Hastings is financially abusing his wife, breaking that cage is going to require a tactical nuclear strike," I murmured, my mind already calculating the immense risks.

"I told her we could offer her safe harbor regardless," Chloe said. "But she said she didn't just want to hide. She said she wants to burn his empire to the ground. I figured you two would get along perfectly."
I tightened my grip on the folder, a familiar, cold determination settling into my bones. "Let's go meet the Senator's wife."
