Chapter 60 - The Painted Portrait

In the spring, we commissioned a world-renowned artist to paint a formal family portrait.

The entire family gathered in the grand foyer, dressed impeccably. It was a chaotic, hilarious morning of trying to get toddlers to stand still and teenagers to stop looking at their phones.

"Everyone, look at the canvas and try to pretend you actually like each other!"

Julian joked, causing a ripple of genuine laughter through the group.

I stood in the center, with Alexander standing tall and protective right behind me, his hand resting firmly on my waist.

"Hold that exact expression,"

The painter requested, his brush flying across the canvas.

I looked at the massive mirror behind the artist, reflecting our entire family. We were a beautiful, unbreakable army.

"It is perfect,"

Alexander whispered in my ear.

When the portrait was finally unveiled weeks later, it was hung above the grand fireplace. It was not a painting of a stiff, arrogant dynasty. It was a masterpiece capturing the profound, radiant warmth of a family that had survived the dark and stepped entirely into the light.
