Chapter 53 - The Echoes of Laughter

By noon, the quiet serenity of the estate was joyously shattered.
Three luxury SUVs pulled into the long, winding driveway. Our children, now grown and leading incredibly successful lives of their own, had arrived for the weekend, bringing their own children with them.
The grand foyer, which had once felt like a cold, echoing fortress, was instantly filled with the chaotic, vibrant sounds of life.
"Grandma!"
A tiny voice shrieked.
Before I could even step off the bottom stair, my youngest granddaughter, Lily, slammed into my legs, wrapping her tiny arms around my knees in a fierce hug.
"Hello, my precious little bird,"
I laughed, scooping her up into my arms and kissing her soft cheek.
Alexander descended the stairs right behind me. Instantly, our two teenage grandsons bounded over to him, respectfully but eagerly shaking his hand, clearly idolizing the patriarch of the family.
"You boys have grown another inch since last month,"
May you like
Alexander noted proudly, gripping their shoulders.
I looked around the bustling, loud, beautifully chaotic foyer. Our children were hugging, exchanging jokes, completely unburdened by the paranoia and terror that had defined our own youth. We had successfully absorbed all the darkness, ensuring they only ever inherited the light.
