Chapter 9 - The Smear Campaign

|

Cornered like a trapped animal, Adrian launched a vicious counter-offensive through the media twenty-four hours later.

By Friday afternoon, an exclusive article was published on a notorious corporate gossip blog, featuring a flattering photo of Adrian beside a heavily distorted headshot of me.

The headline read: LOCAL NONPROFIT DIRECTOR ACCUSED OF SABOTAGING FORTY-MILLION-DOLLAR MERGER IN BITTER BREAKUP.

The article claimed that I had suffered a severe mental breakdown after Adrian called off our wedding, alleging that I had used my nonprofit’s legal resources to fabricate stories of abuse using disgruntled former employees.

My phone rang off the hook with calls from board members, donors, and local journalists seeking a statement.

Sarah walked into my office holding a printout of the article, her face flushed with anger.

“Evelyn! This is disgusting!” Sarah fumed. “He’s trying to destroy your credibility before the grand jury can even convene!”

I finished sipping my tea, looking at the article on my desktop screen with absolute amusement.

“He’s using a classic corporate PR playbook, Sarah,” I said calmly. “When the facts are against you, attack the messenger.”

“Are we going to issue a public statement?” Sarah asked.

“No,” I replied, standing up and pulling my blazer off the coat rack. “We aren't going to write a statement. We are going to hold a live press conference on the front steps of the federal courthouse tomorrow morning.”

“Who’s going to speak?”

I looked out my office door at Rosa, Maria, and Elena sitting together in our conference room, holding hands and supporting each other.

“They are,” I said firmly. “Together.”
