Chapter 2 - The Exit in the Elevator

Something inside me became perfectly calm. It was the same icy focus that used to come over me whenever I entered a courtroom.
For years, Adrian had subtly dismissed me. Whenever I challenged his views on corporate ethics, he called me overly emotional. He routinely mocked my nonprofit work as a sweet little hobby meant to pass the time. His wealthy family believed I was marrying up, stepping into a world of real influence.
What Adrian had apparently forgotten was that before founding my organization, I had spent eight years working as a senior employment attorney at one of the top firms in the state.
My nonprofit didn't just hand out food; we represented domestic workers, corporate whistleblowers, and vulnerable women trapped by predatory employers.
And Adrian had made one fatal mistake.
His tech firm was currently in the final stages of a forty-million-dollar merger. That merger required an independent third-party ethics certification.
The lead attorney supervising that certification happened to be my former law partner.
“Move away from the hallway, Adrian,” I said, keeping my tone crisp and measured.
“Give me your phone first, Evelyn,” he demanded, taking a aggressive step forward.
I raised the screen slightly so he could see the live recording uploading directly to a secure cloud server.
“If you prevent Rosa from leaving, this recording gets considerably worse for you in a criminal court.”
Adrian’s fake smile vanished completely. His eyes burned with bitter hatred. After five agonizing seconds of silence, he stepped aside.
I helped Rosa to her feet, keeping my arm around her waist as we walked past him toward the private elevator.
“You'll regret humiliating me, Evelyn!” Adrian called out as the metal doors began to slide shut.
I stared at him through the closing gap, my expression unreadable.
“No, Adrian. I think you're finally going to understand the difference between humiliation and accountability.”
The elevator descended. Beside me, Rosa was trembling so hard her teeth chattered.
I reached up, slid my five-carat engagement ring off my finger, and dropped it casually into my jacket pocket.

I dialed my former partner. “I have a recording you need to hear immediately.”
Rosa touched my arm. “Evelyn... there's something else about Adrian you need to know.”
