Six months after Adrian was sent to state prison, my life had settled into a beautiful, fulfilling new reality.
My legal nonprofit expanded its operations, opening three new satellite clinics across the state dedicated exclusively to protecting vulnerable domestic and corporate workers from retaliation.
Our class-action lawsuit against Sterling Tech was settled out of court, resulting in a fifteen-million-dollar compensation package that was distributed among dozens of former female employees who had been victimized by Adrian’s regime.
One bright Saturday morning, I stood inside the newly renovated wing of our downtown headquarters.
We were hosting an open house for community members, donors, and legal advocates. A large bronze plaque was mounted on the wall near the entrance, reading: THE HARPER-DELGADO CENTER FOR WORKPLACE JUSTICE.
Maria, Elena, and Rosa stood beside me, cutting the red ribbon together as the crowd erupted into enthusiastic applause.
Marcus walked up to me afterward, offering me a warm smile and a cup of coffee.
“You built something incredible here, Evelyn,” Marcus said, looking around the bustling center. “Most people would have just walked away and tried to forget that entire chapter of their life.”
“You can’t run from a fire, Marcus,” I smiled, taking a sip of coffee. “You have to use the ashes to build something stronger.”
He laughed softy. “Well, you certainly burned his house down.”
