Chapter 19 - The Vanguard File

|

The realization hit me like a physical blow.

Adrian was never the mastermind. He was just an arrogant, expendable puppet installed by powerful figures who operated entirely in the shadows.

When I ruined his merger and exposed his personal crimes, I hadn't just brought down a bad fiancé. I had inadvertently severed a major financial artery for one of the most dangerous corporate syndicates in the world.

I immediately scheduled an emergency, closed-door meeting with the Regional Director of the FBI and my brother, who served as a federal judge in the district.

Inside a secure conference room at the federal building, three high-ranking federal agents reviewed the Zurich wire transfer logs I had uncovered.

The Regional Director looked up from the papers, his face somber and pale.

“Miss Harper,” the Director said quietly. “Do you have any idea what you’re holding in these files?”

“I know it belongs to Vanguard Global,” I replied firmly.

“Vanguard Global isn't just a corporate firm, Evelyn,” the Director revealed, leaning across the table. “They are currently under active investigation by international intelligence agencies for state-level financial corruption and illegal weapons trafficking.”

He closed the folder slowly.

“Adrian Sterling was terrified of you because he knew if you looked too closely at his books, you’d find them,” the Director explained. “And now that Adrian is in prison, Vanguard considers you the sole loose end.”
