With the civil suit progressing rapidly and the criminal indictment looming, Sterling Tech’s board of directors took final, decisive action.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, the board held a emergency vote and officially terminated Adrian as CEO for gross misconduct and breach of fiduciary duty. His corporate access was revoked, his executive severance package was completely canceled, and security guards escorted him out of his own building carrying his personal items in a cardboard box.
That same evening, federal marshals arrived at his luxury penthouse.
They executed a search warrant, seizing his desktop computers, financial records, and personal cell phones as part of the ongoing grand jury investigation into corporate extortion and wire fraud.
Deprived of his income, abandoned by his corporate board, and facing millions of dollars in potential legal liabilities, Adrian was forced to put his penthouse on the market at a steep discount just to pay his legal retainers.
I stood on the balcony of my nonprofit office, watching the local evening news broadcast on my mounted wall television.
The news anchor’s voice echoed through the room: “In a shocking turn of events, disgraced former CEO Adrian Sterling has been formally indicted by a federal grand jury on multiple counts of extortion, witness tampering, and filing false official reports...”
Sarah stepped into my office, holding two glasses of sparkling apple cider.
“A toast,” Sarah said, handing me a glass. “To justice.”
