Chapter 20 - The Silent Watcher

Two weeks later.
The FBI placed my foundation under twenty-four-hour federal protection, while an international task force officially launched a secret investigation into Vanguard Global based on the Zurich ledgers I had provided.
Life on the surface appeared calm and victorious.
Our foundation flourished, Rosa was thriving with her daughter, and the city viewed me as a heroic legal advocate who had brought down a corrupt corporate executive.
It was a chilly, misty November evening.
I stood on the glass balcony of my top-floor downtown apartment, looking out at the city skyline as a light drizzle began to fall.
I pulled my wool coat tighter around my shoulders, taking a sip of warm tea.
Down on the street below, parked under the amber light of a flickering streetlamp, sat a sleek black sedan with heavily tinted windows.
It had been parked there every night for a week—never moving, never turning on its headlights, simply idling silently in the dark.
My phone buzzed in my coat pocket.
It was a text from an unlisted number.
I unlocked the screen. The message contained a single, high-definition photograph taken from street level just five seconds ago.
It showed me standing on my balcony, holding my tea cup, framed perfectly through the glass railing.
Beneath the photograph was a simple, typed message:
Adrian was easy to break, Evelyn. Let’s see how strong your foundation really is when the real owners come to collect.
I stood perfectly still on the balcony, looking down at the dark sedan idling in the rain.
I didn't panic. I didn't run inside.
I slowly raised my tea cup toward the dark car in a silent, icy toast, my face completely devoid of fear.

The battle against Adrian was over.
But as the black car slowly pulled away into the foggy night, I knew that the real war had only just begun.
