Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Surprise

|

On Thursday morning, the executive board of Sterling Tech convened for an emergency meeting regarding the upcoming merger.

Adrian sat at the head of the conference room table in his finest charcoal suit, trying desperately to project an air of calm authority to the seven board members seated around him.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Adrian announced smoothly, clapping his hands together. “I assure you, the rumors regarding my personal life are entirely baseless. My former fiancée suffered an emotional episode, but our legal team has the situation fully contained. The ethics review will pass without an issue.”

The heavy mahogany doors at the back of the conference room clicked open.

Marcus stepped inside, carrying a thick black briefcase, followed closely by two representatives from the State Attorney General’s Office.

Adrian’s CEO smile vanished instantly. “What is the meaning of this? This is a private board meeting!”

“Not anymore, Mr. Sterling,” Marcus said, stepping to the head of the table and opening his briefcase. “As the independent supervisor of your merger’s ethics certification, I am formally issuing an immediate denial of compliance.”

The board members gasped, turning in unison to look at Adrian.

“On what grounds?!” Adrian shouted, slamming his hand onto the table as he stood up. “This is a personal vendetta because Evelyn Harper broke off our engagement!”

Marcus didn't raise his voice. He simply pulled out a tablet, plugged it into the room's main projection screen, and pressed play.

Rosa’s voice filled the high-tech conference room, crystal clear: “You promised you'd help me!”

Followed immediately by Adrian’s cold, recorded threat: “If you talk to anyone, I'll tell immigration you stole from me.”

The board members stared at the screen in utter horror.

Before Adrian could speak, Marcus laid a stack of formal subpoenas on the table.

“The State Attorney General has opened an official investigation into Sterling Tech for systemic extortion, falsification of evidence, and witness tampering,” Marcus announced. “The merger is officially frozen indefinitely.”
