Chapter 33

The drive home from the courthouse felt entirely different. The suburban streets were no longer a potential battlefield; they were just quiet, beautiful roads leading to his sanctuary. When Julian pulled the SUV into the driveway, he didn't immediately rush inside. He sat behind the wheel for a long moment, simply staring at the modern, amber-lit house.

He walked through the front door and was instantly greeted by the smell of baking cookies and the sound of loud, joyful laughter.

Lily ran down the hallway, throwing herself into his arms before he even had a chance to take off his coat.

"Did we win?" Lily asked, looking up at him with wide, hopeful eyes.

"We won," Julian smiled, picking her up and spinning her around the entryway. "The judge said she can never bother us again. We are completely, officially safe."

Lily buried her face in his neck, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of absolute relief. The invisible weight she had been carrying on her small shoulders for months finally evaporated entirely.

Later that afternoon, to celebrate their permanent victory, Julian, Lily, and the baby went out to the backyard. The crisp autumn air was refreshing, and the golden hour sunlight cast long, beautiful shadows across the manicured lawn.

Julian was digging a small hole near the wooden fence, while Lily carefully held a young, fragile sapling—a Japanese Maple they had picked out from the nursery that morning.

"Why are we planting a tree, Dad?" Lily asked, gently placing the roots into the dark soil.

"Because a tree represents roots, sweetie," Julian explained, packing the dirt firmly around the base of the sapling. "It means we are permanently planted here. No matter how hard the wind blows, or how bad the storms get, this tree isn't going anywhere. Just like us. We are deeply rooted in each other."

Lily smiled, grabbing a small watering can and sprinkling the soil. "I'm going to watch it grow every single day."

"And it’s going to grow incredibly strong," Julian promised, wiping the dirt from his hands. "Just like you."
