Chapter 27

|

The revelation completely altered the trajectory of the war. Julian wasn't just fighting a bitter ex-wife anymore; he had undeniable proof of a massive, illegal corporate conspiracy designed to defraud his shareholders and destroy his family.

"We need undeniable financial proof that Sterling is using Vanguard's payroll to fund Victoria's legal retainer," Julian strategized, pacing the study with a renewed, ferocious energy. "If we can trace the money, we can prove the extortion."

"I can subpoena Vanguard's payroll records," Marcus suggested over the speakerphone, "but Sterling's lawyers will fight it for months in court. We don't have months, Julian. The board is ready to oust you by next Friday."

Julian stared down at the blue spiral notebook resting on his desk. He placed his hand gently on Lily's shoulder, feeling a profound sense of awe at her brilliance. She had literally handed him the key to his salvation.

"We don't need to subpoena Vanguard," Julian realized, a predatory smile slowly forming on his face. "We just need to subpoena Victoria’s personal bank statements during the custody deposition next week. As a party in a family law dispute claiming financial hardship, she is legally required to disclose all current sources of income. If she lies under oath and hides the Vanguard salary, she commits perjury."

"And if she admits it, she implicates Sterling in the extortion plot," Marcus laughed, a cold, satisfied sound. "It's a brilliant trap, Julian. It's an absolute checkmate."

"We keep this completely quiet," Julian ordered, his eyes locked on the corporate profiles on the tablet. "Sterling thinks I am broken and defeated. Let him believe it. We walk into that deposition on Tuesday looking completely desperate."

Julian hung up the phone and looked down at Lily. She was beaming with pride, her blue notebook resting securely in her hands.

"You did it, sweetie," Julian whispered, kneeling down to her eye level and pulling her into a fierce, tight hug. "You saved us again."

"I just paid attention," Lily smiled, hugging him back tightly. "You always said the truth is in the details."
