Chapter 31

|

The fallout from the federal indictment was swift and merciless. Arthur Sterling was arrested at his private estate and held without bail, his massive corporate empire crumbling around him like a house of cards. The media narrative shifted instantaneously, transforming Julian from an erratic, aggressive father into a brilliant, steadfast leader who had single-handedly exposed a massive corporate conspiracy.

But for Julian, the corporate victory was entirely secondary to the safety of his home.

It was a rainy Sunday afternoon. Julian was sitting in the living room, helping Lily with a complicated science project, while the baby babbled happily in his playpen. The fire crackled warmly in the hearth, casting a beautiful, amber glow over the room.

The doorbell rang, a hesitant, weak sound that sharply contrasted with the aggressive ring from a week prior.

Julian frowned. He walked to the entryway and opened the door. Standing on the porch, completely soaked by the freezing rain, was Victoria. She looked absolutely miserable. Her expensive designer clothes were rumpled, her makeup was smeared, and the arrogant, untouchable aura she usually projected was entirely gone.

"Julian," Victoria sobbed, her voice cracking as she wrapped her arms around herself to ward off the cold. "Please. You have to help me. The FBI froze all of my bank accounts. Sterling threw me under the bus, he told them the extortion plot was entirely my idea. I have nowhere to go."

Julian stared at the woman who had caused him so much profound agony. He felt absolutely no anger anymore. He only felt a cold, distant pity.

"I can't help you, Victoria," Julian said softly, his voice devoid of any emotion.

"I'm the mother of your child!" Victoria begged, reaching a trembling hand out toward the doorframe. "Please, Julian, I'm sorry. I was greedy, I was stupid, but I'm sorry. Just let me come inside and get warm."

"You lost the right to use that title a long time ago," Julian replied firmly, stepping back and preparing to close the door. "You tried to destroy Lily's life to buy a penthouse. You made your choices. Now you have to face the consequences."

He didn't wait for her to respond. He closed the heavy mahogany door, locked the deadbolt, and walked back into the warmth of his sanctuary, leaving the ghost of his past outside in the cold rain forever.
