Chapter 19

The school bell rang loudly, signaling the end of the day, and a flood of children poured out of the main doors into the crisp afternoon air. Lily walked quietly alongside her best friend, Maya, but her mind was entirely elsewhere. While the other kids chattered enthusiastically about video games and weekend plans, Lily’s sharp eyes were scanning the perimeter of the school parking lot.
She remembered the black sedan from that morning. She remembered the tight, strained look on her father's face when he checked the rearview mirror.
"Are you coming to my birthday party on Saturday?" Maya asked, tugging on Lily's sleeve.
"Of course I am," Lily smiled warmly, though her gaze remained fixed on the street.
As they approached the designated pickup zone, Lily spotted it. Parked discreetly across the street, half-hidden in the shadow of a large elm tree, was the exact same black sedan with the tinted windows. The engine was idling quietly, emitting a thin wisp of white exhaust into the cold air.
Lily stopped walking. She reached into her bright pink backpack and pulled out a brand new, dark blue spiral notebook. She had retired the pink one, placing it in her father's desk as a symbol of their past victory. But the blue notebook was fresh, its pages completely blank and ready.
"What are you doing?" Maya asked, looking at her confused.
"Just practicing my observation skills," Lily murmured, unclicking her pen.

She stood perfectly still, squinting through the afternoon sunlight. The tint on the sedan's windows was heavy, but the angle of the sun illuminated the front windshield just enough for her to see the silhouette of a man holding a camera with a long telephoto lens. He was pointing it directly at the school gates.
Lily didn't panic. She calmly opened her blue notebook and wrote down the make and model of the car, followed by the license plate number. She noted the time, the location, and a brief description of the man's shadow. The fear that Victoria used to instill in her was entirely gone, replaced by a fierce, protective determination. Nobody was going to hurt her family ever again.
