Chapter 32

The final custody hearing was a completely different experience from the terrifying deposition. This time, the courtroom was bright and quiet, completely devoid of aggressive litigators and hostile tension. Julian sat at the petitioner's table with Marcus, wearing a sharp gray suit, feeling a profound sense of absolute peace.

Victoria's seat at the respondent's table was completely empty.

"Let the record show that the respondent, Victoria Vance, has failed to appear for this final custody determination," the judge, a stern but kind-looking woman, announced from the high bench.

Marcus stood respectfully. "Your Honor, as the court is aware, the respondent is currently in federal custody pending trial for perjury and corporate extortion. She has formally waived her right to contest this proceeding and has signed the final surrender documents."

The judge nodded slowly, looking down at the massive file before her. She had read the deposition transcripts, she knew about the Vanguard conspiracy, and she was acutely aware of the emotional terrorism Victoria had inflicted upon the child.

"Mr. Vance," the judge said, looking directly at Julian with a warm, approving smile. "The court has reviewed all the evidence, including the incredibly detailed and highly observant notes provided by your daughter, Lily. It is the opinion of this court that you are an exemplary father who has gone to extraordinary lengths to protect your children from a highly toxic environment."

Julian felt a heavy, emotional lump form in his throat. He simply nodded, unable to speak.

"Therefore," the judge continued, striking her gavel with a definitive, satisfying crack, "I am granting you absolute, sole legal and physical custody of Lily and the infant. The respondent is permanently stripped of all parental rights and is barred from any contact with the children. This nightmare is over, Mr. Vance. Go home and enjoy your family."

Julian stood up, shaking Marcus’s hand with tears shining in his eyes. The legal war was officially, permanently concluded. He had fought a billionaire tycoon and a manipulative ex-wife, and he had won everything that truly mattered. He was a free man, and his children were finally, completely safe.
