Chapter 16

|
The peaceful months following the exposure of the truth had settled over Julian’s household like a warm, protective blanket. The traumatic memories of deception that once haunted their halls were slowly fading, replaced by the joyful, chaotic sounds of a genuinely happy family. It was a crisp Monday morning, and the golden sunlight streamed through the kitchen windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Julian stood by the marble island, expertly pouring a fresh cup of dark roast coffee while simultaneously balancing the baby on his left hip.
Lily sat at the breakfast table, meticulously organizing her colored pencils for the school day. She wore a bright yellow sweater, her expression serene and focused. Julian watched her with a profound sense of pride. She had grown so much since the ordeal with the pink spiral notebook, transforming from a quiet, anxious observer into a confident, vibrant young girl.
Just as Julian took his first sip of coffee, the harsh ring of the doorbell shattered the morning tranquility. He frowned, glancing at the clock. It was far too early for the mail carrier, and they weren't expecting any deliveries.
"I'll get it, Dad," Lily offered, already sliding out of her chair.
"No, stay here and finish your breakfast, sweetie," Julian instructed gently, adjusting the baby in his arms. "I'll see who it is."
He walked down the hallway and pulled open the heavy mahogany front door. Standing on the porch was a man in a crisp gray suit, holding a thick, manila envelope. The man's expression was completely devoid of emotion, a professional mask that instantly set Julian’s nerves on edge.
"Julian Vance?" the man asked, his voice flat and clinical.
"Yes, that's me," Julian replied, his posture stiffening defensively.

"You've been served," the man stated abruptly, thrusting the heavy envelope into Julian’s free hand before turning on his heel and walking briskly down the driveway.
Julian closed the door slowly, staring down at the thick legal documents in his hand. A cold, sinking feeling pooled in his stomach. He didn't need to open the envelope to know who it was from. Victoria, his estranged ex-wife and the architect of their past misery, had returned. And based on the sheer weight of the legal packet, she wasn't just looking for an apology. She was looking for a war.
