Chapter 9 - The Boy Who Saw Too Much

|

Before I could answer Julian's pathetic question, the overwhelming emotion of the moment threatened to break my carefully constructed facade. A single, traitorous tear pricked the corner of my eye.

I took a sharp breath, fighting to maintain my composure. I could not break down. Not here. Not in front of the woman who was trying to steal my life.

That was when I felt a firm, reassuring squeeze on my left hand.

I looked down. Leo was standing perfectly straight, his dark eyes locked onto his father with a fierce, unrelenting intensity that I had never seen before. He didn't look like a child; he looked like a judge delivering a final verdict.

"Mom, don't cry," Leo whispered, his voice steady and remarkably calm. "Let me go ask him who that woman is. Look at me."

I turned my gaze to my son, drawing strength from his profound courage. He was right. Tears were for victims, and we were not victims. We were the executioners.

"I'm not crying, baby," I whispered back, my voice turning to steel. "Do what we planned."

Julian, desperate to do damage control, took another step toward us, holding his hands up in a placating gesture.

"Claire, please, let's go outside and talk," Julian stammered, his eyes darting nervously around the room, acutely aware of the hundreds of guests watching his demise. "This is a huge misunderstanding. You're making a scene."

"I'm not making a scene, Julian," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the silent ballroom. "You made the scene when you walked into a corporate gala with a woman who isn't your wife."

Murmurs of shock rippled through the crowd. Chloe looked like she wanted the floor to open up and swallow her whole. She took a step back, trying to distance herself from Julian, but it was far too late for that.

"Claire, stop," Julian begged, panic rising in his throat.

"I'm just getting started," I replied.
