Chapter 18 - The Asset Freeze

Six months later, we finally sat across from each other in a sterile, brightly lit mediation room at the downtown courthouse.
Julian looked like a ghost of his former self. He had aged ten years in six months. He wore a cheap suit that didn't fit him right, and his hands shook slightly as he reviewed the settlement documents.
His lawyer, a frantic, overworked public defender he had hired after his high-priced attorneys dropped him for non-payment, sat quietly beside him.
Eleanor Vance sat next to me, looking like a shark smelling blood in the water.
"The terms are non-negotiable," Eleanor stated, sliding the thick stack of papers across the long wooden table. "My client receives the house, full primary custody of Leo, and eighty percent of the domestic investment portfolios. In exchange, we will not pursue criminal fraud charges regarding the Cayman Islands accounts."
Julian stared at the papers, his jaw tight. "I get twenty percent?" he asked, his voice hollow.
"You get enough to pay your corporate restitution and keep yourself out of federal prison," Eleanor corrected coldly. "You should be thanking us."
Julian looked up at me, his eyes filled with a desperate, lingering sadness. "Claire... is this really how it ends? Eleven years, and this is it?"
I looked at him, feeling absolutely nothing. No anger. No sorrow. Just profound, liberating indifference.

"You ended it, Julian," I said softly. "I just finalized the paperwork."
He stared at me for a long moment, realizing that the woman he had once controlled was entirely gone. He picked up a cheap plastic pen and signed his name on the dotted line, officially severing our lives forever.
