Chapter 2 - Following the Money

|

The next morning, I sat in the austere, glass-walled office of Eleanor Vance, one of the most ruthless family law attorneys in Chicago. I had bypassed the local, friendly lawyers for someone who specialized in high-net-worth asset recovery.

Eleanor adjusted her reading glasses, scanning the photographs I had taken of Julian's private messages and Leo's meticulously detailed ledger.

"Your son is quite the investigator," Eleanor said, a hint of genuine impressed awe in her strict tone. "This timeline matches up perfectly with the offshore transfers my forensic accountant flagged preliminary."

"Offshore transfers?" I asked, my hands gripping the armrests of the leather chair. "Julian doesn't have offshore accounts."

"He does now," Eleanor corrected smoothly. "When a man plans to leave his wife, he rarely does it without a financial parachute. Julian has been siphoning funds from your joint investment portfolios into a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands for the past six months. He's preparing to file for divorce, and he’s trying to leave you with nothing."

The air left my lungs. The infidelity was a knife to the heart, but the financial betrayal was a bullet to the head. He wasn't just having an affair; he was actively orchestrating my ruin.

"How much?" I choked out.

"Nearly two million dollars," Eleanor replied without blinking. "And he just signed a lease on a penthouse in River North under his mistress's name. Chloe Adams."

I closed my eyes, the name echoing in my mind like a death knell. Chloe. The woman with the dark hair and the sleek dress from Claudia's photograph.

"What do we do?" I asked, opening my eyes to meet the lawyer's fierce gaze.

"We strike first," Eleanor said, leaning forward. "I have drafted an emergency injunction to freeze all of his global assets. But a judge won't sign it until Monday morning. You need to keep him comfortable and completely oblivious through the weekend. Can you do that?"

May you like

"The firm's charity gala is this Saturday," I said, a dangerous plan forming in my mind. "He thinks I'm staying home."

Eleanor smiled, a sharp, predatory expression. "Perfect."
