Chapter 8 - The Weight of Stares

|

It started like a slow wave. The CEO, who was speaking to Julian, suddenly trailed off mid-sentence, his eyes widening as he looked over Julian's shoulder and saw me standing there in my crimson gown.

The color drained entirely from the CEO's face. He knew who I was. He had attended our wedding eleven years ago.

Julian, noticing the sudden silence from his boss, frowned in confusion. "Everything alright, Richard?"

Richard didn't answer. He just stared at me, frozen in absolute shock.

Chloe, sensing the shift in the room's energy, turned her head. When she saw me, her fake, polished smile completely collapsed. She recognized me from the framed photographs in Julian's office that he hadn't yet bothered to hide. Her hand, which had been resting intimately on Julian's bicep, dropped as if she had been burned by a live wire.

Finally, guided by the horrified stares of his colleagues, Julian slowly turned around.

The moment his eyes locked onto mine, I watched his entire world shatter in real-time.

The arrogant, effortless smile vanished instantly. His face went chalk-white, all the blood draining from his features. The champagne flute in his hand trembled so violently that liquid sloshed over the rim, spilling onto his expensive tuxedo shoes.

He opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out.

The entire VIP section of the ballroom was dead silent. The silence spread outward, infecting the rest of the room until the string quartet awkwardly stopped playing, unsure of what was happening. Hundreds of eyes were fixed on the devastating tableau: the cheating husband, the terrified mistress, the stunningly dressed wife, and the stoic child.

I didn't scream. I didn't throw a drink. I simply stood there, letting the crushing weight of public humiliation slowly press the life out of him.

Julian took a stumbling step forward, his voice a hoarse, panicked whisper. "Claire... what are you doing here?"
