Chapter 10 - The Legal Weapon

I calmly reached into my black velvet clutch. The movement was slow and deliberate, holding the attention of everyone in the room.
I pulled out a crisp, white manila envelope, sealed with the embossed logo of Eleanor Vance's elite law firm.
Julian's eyes dropped to the envelope, and the panic in his face morphed into sheer, unadulterated terror. He knew that logo. Every high-powered executive in Chicago knew that logo. It was the mark of financial annihilation.
"What is that?" Julian asked, his voice cracking.
"This is reality, Julian," I said, stepping forward and extending the envelope toward him.
He hesitated, his hand shaking as he reached out to take it. He tore open the seal, pulling out the thick stack of legal documents.
"As of 4:00 PM yesterday," I announced, making sure my voice reached the CEO standing behind him, "a federal judge signed an emergency injunction freezing all of your assets. The domestic accounts, the stock portfolios, and the shell corporation in the Cayman Islands where you've been hiding two million dollars of marital funds."
The CEO gasped audibly, stepping back from Julian as if he had just been diagnosed with a highly contagious disease. Hiding assets offshore was not just a marital betrayal; it was corporate suicide.
Julian stared at the documents, his eyes rapidly scanning the dense legal jargon. "You... you can't do this. I'm ruined."
"You ruined yourself, Julian," I said coldly. "I'm also officially serving you with divorce papers. I get full custody of Leo, the house, and exactly what is legally owed to me. If you contest it, my lawyers will drag every single detail of your financial fraud into open court."
Julian looked up at me, his eyes wide and desperate. "Claire, please, we can fix this. I love you. She means nothing to me!"

Chloe let out a sharp gasp of indignation, stepping forward. "Excuse me?!"
But before the mistress could defend her honor, Leo let go of my hand.
