Chapter 13 - The Silence of the Room

The word hung in the air, a final, damning verdict delivered by a child who had seen too much.
Julian slowly stood up, his legs shaking beneath him. He looked around the ballroom, his eyes darting frantically from face to face, searching for a single shred of sympathy. He found none.
The CEO of his firm, Richard, stepped forward, his face a mask of absolute fury and disgust.
"Julian," Richard said, his voice vibrating with anger. "You just admitted on tape to defrauding your wife and illegally hiding assets offshore while serving as a senior partner at this firm."
"Richard, wait, that recording is out of context!" Julian stammered wildly, his hands waving in desperation. "It's illegal to record someone without their consent!"
"I don't give a damn about the legality of the recording," Richard snapped coldly. "I give a damn about the integrity of this firm. You have disgraced us. You are a liability."
"Richard, please, we have the huge merger next week—"
"You are no longer a partner at this firm," Richard stated, cutting him off completely. "Security will escort you to your office to clear out your personal belongings on Monday morning. Do not contact any of our clients. You're fired."
Julian staggered backward, clutching the manila envelope as if it were a life preserver. He had just lost his marriage, his son, his fortune, and his highly lucrative career in the span of exactly five minutes.
