Chapter 6 - The Grand Ballroom

|

The Drake Hotel ballroom was a masterpiece of gilded elegance. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the hundreds of guests dressed in black-tie attire. The room hummed with the sound of clinking champagne glasses, classical string music, and the low murmur of high-stakes corporate networking.

I pulled my car up to the valet, handing the keys to an attendant who looked slightly taken aback by my crimson gown. I took a deep breath, letting the icy Chicago air fill my lungs, and offered my arm to my twelve-year-old son.

"Head high, Leo," I whispered as we approached the grand double doors.

"Always," he replied smoothly.

We bypassed the main check-in desk. As the wife of one of the firm's senior partners, I didn't need an invitation. We stepped through the towering doors and into the chaotic beauty of the gala.

The moment we entered, heads began to turn.

I had intentionally arrived two hours late, timing my entrance perfectly. The initial networking had finished, and the guests were settling into the heavy drinking phase of the evening.

A few wives of other partners recognized me, their eyes widening in shock. I wasn't supposed to be there, and I certainly wasn't supposed to look like a cinematic femme fatale. Whispers began to ripple outward from the entrance, spreading through the ballroom like wildfire.

"Is that Julian's wife?" I heard a voice murmur to my left.

"She looks incredible," another whispered.

I ignored them all, my eyes scanning the massive room with predatory focus. I navigated through the sea of tuxedos and ballgowns, moving toward the VIP section near the stage, where the senior executives usually congregated.

Leo stayed close to my side, his posture rigidly straight. He didn't look like a scared child; he looked like a young king surveying his treacherous court.

"Do you see him?" I asked quietly.

May you like

"Ten o'clock," Leo whispered back. "By the ice sculpture."

I turned my head, and my heart instantly turned to stone.
