Chapter 15 - The Queen's Exit

Leo took my hand, his grip strong and reassuring.

We didn't run out of the ballroom. We walked slowly, our heads held high, moving with a quiet, devastating dignity that commanded absolute respect from everyone in the room.

As we walked back through the sea of guests, the crowd parted for us automatically. No one whispered. No one pointed. Several of the wives who had previously looked at me with pity now offered subtle nods of profound admiration.

We reached the grand double doors of the Drake Hotel and stepped out into the freezing, bracing air of the Chicago night.

The valet quickly brought my car around, rushing to open the door for us. I slipped the valet a generous tip, sliding into the driver's seat while Leo climbed into the passenger side.

I started the engine, the heater roaring to life, warming my cold hands.

I looked over at my twelve-year-old son. He was staring out the window at the glittering city lights, his face relaxed for the first time in months. The heavy burden of his father's secret had finally been lifted from his small shoulders.

"Are you okay, Leo?" I asked softly, reaching across the console to squeeze his arm.

Leo turned to look at me, a genuine, tired smile spreading across his face.

"I'm really okay, Mom," he said quietly. "Are you?"

I looked at the rearview mirror, watching the grand hotel fade into the distance behind us. I felt a profound, overwhelming sense of freedom wash over me. The pain of the betrayal was still there, but it was overshadowed by the sheer, unadulterated power of reclaiming my life.

"I'm better than okay," I promised him. "We're going to be just fine."
