Chapter 9 - The Dead Notary's Seal

"Look at this document, Nora," Samuel said, spreading a high-resolution scan across his conference table four weeks before the court hearing.
It was a Durable Power of Attorney document dated March 18th, granting Preston total, unrestricted authority over the Hart family trust, Nora’s business accounts, and all inherited real estate.
At the bottom of the page was a signature that looked remarkably like Nora’s, alongside the official raised seal and stamp of a Colorado State Notary Public named Patricia Yates.
Nora stared at the date. "March 18th? Samuel, I wasn't even in Denver on March 18th!"
"Where were you?"
"I was in Santa Fe, New Mexico, supervising the masonry restoration on the historic Santa Fe Courthouse dome!" Nora declared, pulling out her phone. "I have flight receipts, hotel logs, site logs, and fifty eyewitnesses who worked with me on that scaffolding all day!"
"Preston claimed in his court filing that you physically appeared before this notary, Patricia Yates, in downtown Denver on the morning of March 18th to execute this grant," Samuel said, a grim smile spreading across his face.
"That's impossible!"
"It's more than impossible, Nora," Samuel chuckled, pulling a certified document from his briefcase. "I ran Patricia Yates’s notary commission number through the Colorado Secretary of State database."
He laid the certified paper on the table.
"Patricia Yates’s notary commission expired three years ago," Samuel revealed. "And according to her official death certificate from the State of Colorado, Mrs. Yates passed away in a nursing home twenty-six months ago."
Nora gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "He used a dead woman's notary stamp?!"
"He used an old, discarded notary seal template he found in a public archive or bought online," Samuel explained. "He thought no one would ever bother to cross-reference the commission number of a routine power of attorney document. He assumed you would be too heavily medicated to ever challenge it in court."

"This proves the power of attorney is a complete forgery!" Nora exclaimed.
"It gets better," Samuel smiled, pulling out another thick stack of analytical reports. "Wait until you see what the forensic document examiners found."
