Chapter 15 - The Audio Execution

|
The court technician inserted the silver flash drive into the courtroom audio system. A soft static hum filled the room, followed by the crisp, clear voice of Evelyn Hart echoing through the speakers.
"If you are listening to this recording," Evelyn’s voice began, sounding vital, sharp, and completely composed, "it means I have passed away, and my daughter Nora is in severe danger."
Preston lowered his head into his hands, his shoulders trembling.
"For the past six months," Evelyn’s recorded voice continued, "I have observed my son-in-law, Preston Caldwell, making unauthorized inquiries regarding the liquid assets of the Hart family trust. I hired a private investigator who uncovered that Preston has been quietly shopping our Breckenridge land to commercial resort developers."
The courtroom was so quiet you could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning unit.
"I have recorded several telephone conversations between Preston and a woman named Celeste Arden," Evelyn’s voice declared chillingly. "I am attaching those digital audio files to this storage device."
The technician clicked the next audio track.
The speakers crackled, and then Preston’s own voice filled the courtroom:
"Pregnancy makes it easy, Celeste," Preston’s recorded voice bragged callously. "Everyone expects pregnant women to be emotionally volatile and paranoid. If Nora starts asking questions about the accounts, we just make her questions part of her mental health diagnosis. Dr. Voss is already preparing the clinical notes."
Celeste’s recorded voice replied: "And what happens after the baby is born?"
"We file for full sole custody based on her psychological record," Preston answered smoothly. "She gets visits once a month under supervision, and we keep total management control over the trust funds forever."

Nora sat perfectly still as the words echoed through the room. Hearing the terrifying blueprint of her own destruction laid out in Preston’s arrogant, casual tone sent a wave of icy fury through her blood.
Judge Holloway closed her eyes briefly, letting out a long, heavy breath. When she opened them, her gaze fixed on Preston Caldwell with the fury of an executioner.
