That night, Nora didn't scream. She didn't cry. She nodded quietly, pretended to submit to his threat, and went to bed.
The next morning, while Preston was at work, Nora called Samuel Ortega—the veteran corporate and estate attorney who had represented her mother's firm for over twenty years.
Samuel listened to Nora’s trembling voice for twenty minutes without interrupting.
"Nora," Samuel said gravely when she finished. "I need you to listen to me very carefully. You are in severe danger. If he has Dr. Voss in his pocket, he can legally petition for emergency guardianship over you and your estate."
"What do I do, Samuel?" Nora sobbed into the phone. "He took everything. He took my keys, my access codes, my self-respect."
"First, stop taking those pills immediately, but pretend you are still taking them," Samuel instructed. "Flush them down the toilet. Second, we need an independent medical evaluation from an uncorrupted specialist to prove you possess full mental capacity."
Over the next six weeks, Nora played the performance of her life.
She acted docile, confused, and timid whenever Preston was home. She nodded vaguely when he talked about financial restructurings. But behind the scenes, a secret counter-offensive was launched.
Samuel arranged for Nora to be evaluated by Dr. Sarah Lin, the Head of Forensic Psychiatry at Colorado State Hospital. Dr. Lin conducted extensive neurological and psychological testing over three secret visits. Her conclusion was absolute: Nora suffered from no cognitive impairment, no psychosis, and no organic memory loss. Her mild anxiety was a completely normal response to severe psychological abuse, grief, and pregnancy.
Furthermore, Dr. Lin ran a comprehensive toxicology panel on the medication Dr. Voss had prescribed. The results were shocking. The dosage was three times higher than the FDA recommendation for pregnant women—a level guaranteed to cause severe lethargy, memory lapses, and disorientation.
"He wasn't treating you, Nora," Dr. Lin said grimly, handing the report to Samuel. "He was chemically incapacitating you."
