Chapter 11 - The Midnight Intruder

|

The final piece of the trap clicked into place forty-eight hours before the court hearing.

Samuel received a encrypted file from a private security consultant he had hired to audit the surveillance footage of the First National Bank of Denver—the branch where $500,000 had been transferred out of the Hart family trust into an account belonging to Alpine Legacy Management.

Preston’s legal team had insisted that Nora had walked into the bank herself to hand-deliver the wire authorization forms.

Samuel clicked play on the video file.

The footage showed the private drive-thru teller lane of the bank on the afternoon of April 4th. A luxury black SUV with tinted windows pulled up to the window. The driver pulled down the window, handing a sealed manila envelope containing the forged wire forms directly to the teller.

The driver was wearing oversized sunglasses and a wide-brimmed sun hat, making her face difficult to identify.

"She covered her face," Nora sighed, watching the screen. "Is that enough to prove it was Celeste?"

"Look at the bottom left corner of the video feed, Nora," Samuel pointed out, smiling broadly.

The bank’s high-definition security camera mounted on the lower curb caught the front bumper of the SUV as it pulled away. The license plate was fully illuminated under the halogen lights.

Samuel pulled up the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles registration file for that plate number.

"The vehicle is registered directly to Celeste Arden," Samuel stated softly. "And cell phone tower pings place Celeste’s mobile phone within fifty feet of that bank teller window at the exact minute the transaction was processed."

Nora leaned back in her chair, looking at the mountain of evidence stacked neatly inside the thin brown folder.

Flight logs proving she was in Santa Fe.

A death certificate proving the notary was dead.

Forensic handwriting analysis proving automated signature tracing.

Computer metadata linking the file creation to Preston's office.

And bank surveillance logs tying Celeste directly to the physical delivery of stolen funds.

"They thought they built an airtight trap," Nora whispered, looking at her swelling stomach. "They thought I was too weak, too broken, and too crazy to fight back."

"They underestimated you, Nora," Samuel said, closing his briefcase. "And tomorrow morning in Courtroom 4B, Preston Caldwell is going to find out just how catastrophic that mistake really was."
