Chapter 7 - The Aspen Betrayal

|

The turning point came on a freezing Thursday evening in late May, three months before the court hearing.

Nora had stayed home while Preston claimed he had an urgent commercial zoning meeting in Denver. The heavy medication Dr. Voss prescribed sat on her nightstand, but that morning, Nora had accidentally dropped her pill bottle down the bathroom sink. For thirty-six hours, no fresh sedatives had entered her system.

As the chemical fog slowly cleared from her brain, a strange, sharp clarity returned in its place.

Nora walked down to Preston’s private home office in the basement. The door was usually locked, but tonight, the brass latch hadn't caught completely.

She pushed the door open. The room smelled of Preston’s expensive cologne and leather.

She walked over to his mahogany desk and began opening drawers. In the bottom drawer, tucked beneath corporate tax returns, she found a glossy black folder. Inside were dozens of high-resolution photographs taken by a private investigator in Aspen three weeks earlier.

The photos didn't show zoning meetings.

They showed Preston and Celeste Arden walking arm-in-arm down a snow-covered street in Aspen. They showed them sharing an intimate, candlelit dinner at an exclusive steakhouse. They showed them kissing passionately on the balcony of a luxury penthouse suite—a suite paid for using an account from the Hart family trust.

Nora stood in the dark office, holding the photographs, as her heart shattered into a thousand jagged pieces. But alongside the crushing heartbreak, something else sparked to life inside her: an icy, roaring rage.

She wasn't insane. She wasn't losing her memory. She was being systematically dismantled by the man who had promised to love her until death.

When Preston returned home at midnight, he found Nora sitting at the dining room table with the photographs laid out before her.

He didn't panic. He didn't even apologize.

Preston slowly closed the front door, removed his coat, and walked over to the table. He looked down at the photos with cold, calculating indifference.

"You shouldn't have been snooping, Nora," he said softly, leaning over her chair until his breath touched her ear. "Who do you think anyone is going to believe? A respected developer protecting his family, or a grieving, unhinged pregnant woman off her meds?"

He reached out, gathered the photographs, and put them in his pocket.

"If you try to make a scene about this," Preston warned, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper, "I will have Dr. Voss commit you to an inpatient psychiatric facility before the week is out. And when that baby is born, you won't even be allowed to hold her."
