Chapter 17 - The Fall of Preston Caldwell

Judge Miriam Holloway did not hesitate. She picked up her pen and began signing a series of emergency judicial orders with rapid, decisive strokes.
"Let the record reflect," Judge Holloway announced, her voice echoing with absolute authority, "that this court finds overwhelming preliminary evidence of systematic grand larceny, document forgery, fraud, witness tampering, and physical assault committed against the petitioner, Mrs. Nora Caldwell."
She looked directly at Preston Caldwell.
"Effective immediately," Judge Holloway ordered:
"One: All assets, accounts, properties, and corporate entities belonging to or inherited by Mrs. Nora Caldwell are placed under total, permanent asset freeze under the sole control of an independent court-appointed fiduciary."
"Two: Mr. Preston Caldwell’s power of attorney, management authority, and spousal access rights are revoked completely."
"Three: A permanent, emergency protection order is issued barring Mr. Caldwell and Ms. Arden from approaching within 1,000 feet of Mrs. Caldwell, her home, her business, or her child."
Judge Holloway struck her gavel once.
"Furthermore," the judge added, turning to the armed bailiffs. "Mr. Caldwell and Ms. Arden are to be remanded into custody immediately by the Denver County Sheriff’s Department pending formal criminal indictments for grand theft, forgery, and conspiracy."
Two deputies stepped up behind Preston Caldwell. Before he could speak, before his lawyer could utter a single objection, the cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly around Preston’s wrists.
His smug confidence was completely gone. His tailored navy suit was wrinkled, his face pale as death, his eyes wide with pathetic, terrified disbelief as he was pulled up out of his chair.
As the deputies began walking Preston past the petitioner's table toward the holding cells, he looked at Nora.
"Nora... please," Preston begged, his voice trembling like a child’s. "Talk to me. We can fix this. Think about our family..."

Nora stood up slowly, her hand resting gracefully on the curve of her belly. She looked at the man who had tried to steal her life, her sanity, and her child.
"My family is standing right here, Preston," Nora said, her voice dropping into a register of pure, unbreakable diamond. "And you will never touch us again."
