Chapter 10 - The Traced Signatures

|
Samuel introduced Dr. Helena Price, one of the nation's foremost forensic handwriting and document examiners. Dr. Price had analyzed four separate key documents Preston had used to transfer Nora’s assets: the Power of Attorney, the Breckenridge Cabin Deed, the Alpine Legacy Consulting Agreement, and a $500,000 bank wire authorization form.
Dr. Price placed microscopic high-definition overlays of Nora’s alleged signatures onto a lighted screen in Samuel’s office.
"Human signatures are inherently variable, Mrs. Caldwell," Dr. Price explained, pointing a silver pen at the illuminated screen. "No human being, no matter how precise, can sign their name with exact, identical millimeter proportions twice in a row. It is physically impossible due to micro-tremors in human muscles."
She zoomed in on the four signatures.
"When I overlaid these four signatures from four different documents executed across three months, they matched perfectly," Dr. Price revealed. "Down to the microscopic pen hesitation on the cross of the 'T' and the ink pressure on the loop of the 'C'."
Nora leaned in, staring at the screen. "They are exact duplicates."
"They are carbon copies," Dr. Price corrected. "Someone took a high-resolution scan of your genuine signature from an old tax return, placed it digitally onto these fraudulent documents, and then used a motorized, automated ink pen plotter to trace real ink over the printed lines."
"Can you prove the document files were created on Preston's computer?" Nora asked.
"We don't even need his physical computer," Samuel interjected triumphantly. "When digital documents are converted to PDFs, they generate hidden background metadata. We subpoenaed the cloud backup records from Preston’s office network."
Samuel turned a page.
"The metadata shows that the forged deed to your mother's cabin was created on March 17th at 2:13 a.m. on a laptop registered to Preston Caldwell," Samuel said. "And building keycard access logs show that Celeste Arden entered Preston’s private office building at 1:47 a.m. that exact same night and didn't leave until three in the morning."

Nora felt a cold, sharp satisfaction wash over her.
Preston and Celeste hadn't just committed fraud; they had left a digital trail of breadcrumbs leading straight from their crimes to the courthouse doors.
