Chapter 2 - The Stolen Legacy

Samuel leaned back slightly, his sharp eyes narrowing as he surveyed the defense table across the courtroom.
"Are you absolutely certain, Nora?" he murmured under his breath. "A pair of pearl earrings is difficult to verify without a distinct marker or receipt."
"I helped my father select those exact freshwater pearls for my parents' twentieth wedding anniversary," Nora whispered, never breaking her stare. "I know the hand-carved silver filigree on the posts better than my own face."
Her mother, Evelyn Hart, had worn those very earrings every single Sunday for thirty years. Before her sudden, agonizing death from a brain aneurysm, Evelyn had placed them inside an antique cedar box, accompanied by a handwritten letter meant to be opened only after Nora gave birth to her child.
The box had been locked inside a private, heavy-duty fireproof safe at the mountain cabin Nora inherited near Breckenridge. Only two people in the world possessed the combination to that safe: Nora and Preston.
Nora had refused to open the safe since the funeral. The grief was too raw, the pain of reading her mother's final words too overwhelming while she was still navigating the terrifying early months of pregnancy. She wanted to read that letter with her baby cradled safely in her arms.
Now, the sacred pearls swung gently against Celeste Arden’s neck as she leaned toward Preston, whispering something into his ear that caused him to let out a quiet, smug chuckle.
The realization hit Nora like a physical blow to the chest. The theft was infinitely worse than the millions of dollars drained from her bank accounts. Preston hadn't just raided her assets; he had invaded her mother's memory. He had unlocked the sacred cedar box, snatched the heirloom, and draped it over his mistress like a trophy.
"Do not react," Samuel warned, placing a firm, grounding hand over her trembling wrist. "That is precisely what they want. They want an outburst. They want you to look hysterical in front of Judge Holloway."
"He opened her safe, Samuel," Nora rasped, tears of absolute fury stinging the back of her eyes. "He gave her my mother’s letter box."

"I know," Samuel replied, his voice dropping an octave into a cold, dangerous register. "And we are going to make him pay for every single inch of it."
Across the aisle, Preston finally looked directly at Nora. He caught her staring at Celeste’s ears. Instead of flinching, instead of showing a shred of guilt, Preston raised his coffee cup in a silent, cruel toast.
