Chapter 5 - The Secret Pact

The proposition felt incredibly dangerous, like stepping onto a frozen lake and hearing the ice crack beneath your feet. But as Mara looked into Rafe’s desperate, burning eyes, she thought of her father. She thought of the piling dialysis bills, the eviction notices, and the hollow look in her mother’s eyes.
"How much?" Mara asked, her voice surprisingly steady.
"Five thousand dollars a week in cash," Rafe answered without a single blink. "Delivered directly to your hands every Friday. All you have to do is lock this door behind you, follow my exact instructions, and never breathe a word of this to a living soul."
Five thousand dollars. It was life-changing. It was survival.
"I'll do it," Mara agreed, nodding slowly. "What do we do first?"
Rafe pointed to a lower cabinet near his medical bed. "There are sterile pins and sensory rollers in that drawer. Bring them here. We need to map exactly where the nerve pathways are waking up."
For the next two hours, the penthouse became a secret medical ward. Mara knelt beside Rafe’s wheelchair, her initial fear slowly giving way to intense focus. She gently rolled the spiked medical wheel across his calves, his knees, and his thighs, watching his face for any sign of reaction.
"Nothing there," Rafe grunted in frustration as she tested his right leg.
"It's okay. We just have to be patient," Mara said softly, moving to his left thigh. She pressed a small, sterile pin against his skin.
Rafe inhaled sharply, his hand gripping the armrest. "There. A sharp prick. It’s weak, but it’s real."
Mara smiled, a genuine, warm expression that she rarely showed anyone in this building. "That’s progress, Mr. Cordell."
"Rafe," he corrected her quietly, his dark eyes studying her face. "When it's just the two of us in this room, you call me Rafe."
Mara’s breath hitched. Looking at the mafia king so closely, she noticed the faint exhaustion under his eyes and the stubborn strength in his jaw. For the first time, he didn't scare her.

"Okay, Rafe," she whispered.
They worked until dawn. When Mara finally pushed her laundry cart out of the suite, her pockets were heavy with cash, and her fate was irreversibly tied to the most dangerous man in the city.
