Chapter 20 - The New Horizon

|
Six months later.
The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse, casting a warm, golden glow over the massive bed.
Mara lay tangled in the gray silk sheets, watching Rafe sleep. He looked peaceful, the hard, violent edges of the mafia boss softened by the morning light. The cane rested against the nightstand, but he used it less and less every day. His recovery had been miraculous, fueled by sheer stubbornness and his absolute devotion to her.
Her father was recovering beautifully from his transplant, living in a safe, beautiful house Rafe had purchased for them in a quiet, gated community far from the city's violence.
Mara smiled, tracing the jagged scar on Rafe’s cheek with a gentle fingertip. He stirred, his dark eyes fluttering open, instantly locking onto hers with that familiar, burning intensity.
"Good morning, Mrs. Cordell," Rafe murmured, his voice rough with sleep as he pulled her flush against his broad chest.
They had been married in a quiet, private ceremony three months ago, surrounded only by Leo, her parents, and a terrifying amount of armed guards.
"Good morning," Mara smiled, resting her head on his shoulder. "Do we have a busy day today?"
"I have a meeting with the port authorities at noon," Rafe said, kissing the top of her head. "But after that, the day is ours. I thought we could take the boat out on the Gulf."
Suddenly, the heavy reinforced doors to the penthouse buzzed.
Rafe frowned, rolling over and hitting the intercom button on his bedside table. "Leo, what is it?"
"Boss, I’m sorry to wake you," Leo’s voice crackled through the speaker, sounding tense and unusually grim. "But we have a situation at the loading dock."
"I told you to handle the Miami remnants yourself," Rafe grunted, sitting up.
"It's not Miami, Boss," Leo said, hesitation bleeding into his voice. "A black SUV just crashed into the security gate. The driver is dead. But there’s a package in the backseat. It’s addressed to you."
Rafe froze. The peaceful morning evaporated, replaced instantly by the cold, calculating instincts of the mafia king.
"What kind of package?" Rafe asked quietly.
"It’s a briefcase, Boss," Leo replied. "And it bears the crest of the Russian Bratva from New York. They left a note attached."
Mara sat up, clutching the silk sheets to her chest, a chill running down her spine. The Russians hadn't operated in the South for decades.
"What does the note say, Leo?" Rafe demanded, his jaw tight.
May you like
"It says... 'The King may walk, but the Queen will fall.'"
Rafe’s eyes turned pitch black. He ended the call, looking at Mara, the violence waking up inside him to protect the only thing that mattered. The war for the South was over, but a new, darker storm was gathering on the horizon.
