Chapter 11 - The King's Justice

|

They dragged Mara into the hotel’s main security office in the basement. Sylvia demanded the police be called immediately, eager to see Mara handcuffed and hauled away in a squad car.

But before the security chief could even pick up the phone, the heavy steel door to the office was violently kicked open.

Leo, the broad-shouldered guard from the top floor, stepped inside holding a suppressed submachine gun. Behind him, Rafe wheeled his chair into the cramped room. His face was a mask of absolute, demonic fury.

"Release her," Rafe commanded softly.

The two guards holding Mara instantly let her go, stepping back in sheer terror. Mara stumbled forward, sobbing, and fell to her knees beside Rafe’s wheelchair, burying her face against his arm. Rafe placed a protective hand on her head, glaring at the people in the room.

"Rafe, darling, she stole my necklace!" Sylvia cried, pointing to the diamonds resting on the security desk. "They found it in her bag!"

Rafe slowly wheeled his chair forward, stopping inches from Sylvia.

"I run a multi-million dollar criminal syndicate, Sylvia," Rafe said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "Do you honestly think I don't have hidden cameras in the employee locker rooms to monitor my staff?"

Sylvia went stark white. The smug confidence completely drained from her face.

"Leo," Rafe said.

Leo pulled out a tablet and hit play. He turned the screen toward the room. The grainy black-and-white footage clearly showed Sylvia Vance sneaking into the locker room an hour earlier, opening Mara’s locker, and shoving the diamond necklace into the duffel bag.

Mrs. Crane gasped, covering her mouth in horror.

"You planted it," Rafe growled. "You tried to frame the woman I love."

The entire room froze. The mafia boss had just claimed the plus-size maid in front of everyone.

"Rafe, please, it was just a joke!" Sylvia stammered, backing away. "She’s a nobody! I’m your fiancée!"

"You were a political convenience," Rafe corrected coldly. "The engagement is broken. Pack your bags and get out of my hotel within the hour. If you ever come near Mara again, I will have Leo bury you in the swamp."

Rafe turned to Mrs. Crane. "You're fired. Get out."

He looked down at Mara, his eyes softening instantly. "Come on. Let's go upstairs."
