Chapter 16 - The Father's Debt

|
Two days later, the chaos had settled, replaced by a strange, luxurious peace.
Mara was sitting in the secure suite, drinking coffee, when her cell phone rang. It was her mother.
"Mara, honey!" her mother cried, her voice bright and soaring with an unbelievable joy. "The hospital just called! They said... they said an anonymous donor paid off your father’s entire medical debt! All of it! And they secured a kidney transplant for him. He’s going into surgery on Tuesday!"
Mara gasped, dropping her coffee cup. It shattered on the carpet, but she didn't care. "Mom, are you serious? A transplant?"
"Yes! They said a private foundation covered the whole procedure and the aftercare. It’s a miracle, Mara! It’s a literal miracle!"
Tears of overwhelming relief spilled down Mara’s cheeks. For the first time in years, the crushing weight of her father’s illness lifted off her chest. She spoke to her mother for ten more minutes, crying and laughing, before finally hanging up.
She turned around slowly.
Rafe was standing in the doorway. He was leaning heavily on a sleek, black wooden cane, but he was standing tall and proud. He watched her with a soft, affectionate smile.
"A private foundation, huh?" Mara whispered, walking slowly toward him.
"I don't know what you’re talking about," Rafe lied smoothly, though his dark eyes sparkled with amusement. "I’m just a hotel owner."
Mara didn't say another word. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his chest, sobbing with pure gratitude.
"Thank you," she wept. "Thank you, Rafe. You saved his life."
"You saved mine first," Rafe murmured, resting his chin on top of her head, wrapping his free arm securely around her waist. "I told you, Mara. You are mine to protect now. Your family is my family. Nobody hurts the people you love. Not anymore."
He pulled back slightly, looking down into her tear-stained face. He reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
"I have a meeting with the remaining syndicate bosses tomorrow night," Rafe said, his voice dropping to a serious, commanding rumble. "A gala to solidify my territory and prove that the King is fully back on his throne. I need my Queen standing beside me."

He opened the box. Inside was a stunning, heavy diamond necklace.
"Will you come with me, Mara?"
