Chapter 18 - The Gala

|

The Grand Ballroom of the Meridian Pearl was transformed into a fortress of luxury and danger. It was the premier event of the Gulf Coast underworld, a place where rival bosses, corrupt politicians, and cartel heads gathered under a banner of temporary truce.

The air crackled with tension. Everyone knew Don Vance was dead. Everyone knew Rafe Cordell was no longer paralyzed. They were waiting to see what the newly resurrected king would do next.

When the heavy mahogany doors of the ballroom opened, the entire room went completely, terrifyingly silent.

Rafe Cordell walked in. He moved slowly, leaning on his black cane, but his posture was rigid, imposing, and exuded absolute power.

But the room wasn't just staring at Rafe. They were staring at the woman holding his other arm.

Mara walked beside him, radiating a quiet, fierce confidence. The sapphire dress hugged her curves perfectly, the diamonds glittering under the chandeliers. She felt the heavy, judging stares of the elite women in the room, but she didn't shrink away. She kept her head high, anchoring Rafe as they descended the short staircase into the crowd.

"Look at them," Rafe whispered in her ear, a dark, proud smile on his lips. "They’re terrified of you."

They made their way to the VIP section. Bosses from Chicago, New York, and Vegas nodded respectfully, stepping out of their path.

Suddenly, a harsh, bitter laugh cut through the quiet murmur of the crowd.

Sylvia Vance, wearing a tragic black mourning dress, stepped into their path. She looked disheveled, her makeup smeared, clearly having sneaked past security to confront the man who killed her father.

"You killed him!" Sylvia screamed, pointing a shaking finger at Rafe. "You murdered my father, and you replaced me with this... this fat, pathetic pig!"

The room gasped. Armed guards immediately stepped forward, but Rafe held up his hand, stopping them.

May you like

Rafe looked at Sylvia with utter, chilling indifference. He didn't yell. He simply turned to Mara.

"My Queen," Rafe said smoothly, his voice carrying across the silent ballroom. "What would you like me to do with the trash?"
