Chapter 17 - A Queen's Transformation

Mara stared at the glittering diamonds, feeling completely out of her depth.
"Rafe, I... I don't belong at a syndicate gala," she whispered, stepping back slightly. "Those people are billionaires, politicians, mobsters. I’m just a maid who folds their laundry. They’ll laugh at me."
"Let them try," Rafe said, his voice cold as ice at the mere thought of someone disrespecting her. "Anyone who looks at you with anything less than absolute reverence will lose their eyes. You are not a maid, Mara. You are the woman who stood in front of a shotgun for me. You are the woman who gave me my legs back."
He reached out, catching her hand, rubbing his thumb over her knuckles.
"I want the world to see you exactly as I do," he said softly.
That afternoon, Rafe didn't just send her to a salon; he brought the salon to her.
A team of highly paid, discreet stylists arrived at the secure suite. For four hours, Mara was pampered, polished, and transformed. Her dark hair was swept up into an elegant, intricate updo that exposed the graceful curve of her neck. Her makeup was applied flawlessly, enhancing her natural beauty with a smoky, powerful edge.
Then came the dress.
Rafe had custom-ordered it from a private designer in Paris. It wasn't a loose, shapeless gown designed to hide her body. It was a stunning, deep sapphire-blue velvet dress that hugged every single curve of her plus-size figure with absolute, unapologetic perfection. The fabric cinched at her waist and fell elegantly to the floor, with a slit that allowed her to move with confidence.
When Mara finally looked in the full-length mirror, she gasped. She didn't look like a girl trying to shrink away from the world. She looked like a woman who owned it.
Rafe walked into the room, leaning on his cane. He stopped dead in his tracks. His dark eyes swept over her, completely devouring her appearance. The raw hunger and profound admiration in his gaze made Mara’s cheeks flush.
He walked slowly up behind her, meeting her eyes in the mirror. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the diamond necklace, and gently fastened it around her neck. The cold stones rested heavily against her collarbone.

"Breathtaking," Rafe murmured, kissing the sensitive skin behind her ear, making her shiver. "Are you ready to show them who rules this city?"
Mara took a deep breath, lifting her chin. "I'm ready."
