Chapter 12 - The Syndicate's Wrath

|

The news of the broken engagement sent shockwaves through the criminal underworld. Sylvia’s father, Don Vance of the Miami syndicate, took the public humiliation of his daughter as an act of war.

For three days, the Meridian Pearl felt like a fortress preparing for a siege.

Rafe doubled his security detail. Armed men patrolled the lobbies, the parking garages, and the service corridors. Mara didn't leave the penthouse. She stayed by Rafe’s side, continuing his physical therapy with relentless dedication.

He was walking now. Not far, and not without immense pain, but he could cross the length of the master bedroom using a cane before his muscles gave out. Every step was a closely guarded secret, a weapon they were saving for the right moment.

"Vance is going to retaliate," Rafe said grimly one evening, sitting on the edge of the bed as Mara massaged his calves. "He’s a proud, violent man. He won't let the insult stand."

"Can your men hold him off?" Mara asked, her hands trembling slightly as she worked.

"They can hold the hotel," Rafe nodded, reaching out to gently trace the line of her jaw. "But I’m worried about you. I can send you away. I can put you on a private jet to Europe tonight. You’ll be safe."

Mara stopped massaging his leg. She looked up at him, her eyes fierce and entirely devoid of fear.

"I told you on the first night I wasn't afraid of hard work," Mara said softly. "I’m not running, Rafe. I’m staying right here with you."

Rafe’s dark eyes burned with an intense, overwhelming affection. He pulled her up from the floor, wrapping her in his strong arms, pulling her onto his lap.

"You are the bravest woman I have ever known," he murmured, kissing her deeply, tasting the unwavering loyalty on her lips.

Suddenly, the deafening scream of the hotel's fire alarm shattered the quiet intimacy of the suite.

The heavy reinforced doors of the penthouse buzzed, and Leo burst into the room, his weapon drawn, his face pale and covered in sweat.

"Boss," Leo shouted over the blaring alarm. "Vance’s men just breached the loading dock. They have assault rifles and breaching charges. They’re coming up the service elevators!"
