Chapter 1 - The Permanent Shadow

The whispers started before Mara Dobbins even clocked in for her fifth shift at the Meridian Pearl. The basement laundry room, usually a symphony of hissing steam and tumbling dryers, felt strangely hushed as she walked to her station. Mrs. Crane stood waiting, her face a mask of sour, pinched disbelief. In her skeletal hand, she held out a heavy, matte-black keycard.
"Top floor. Every single night," Mrs. Crane said, her voice dripping with venom. "Do not think this makes you special, Dobbins. Mr. Cordell is a dangerous, unpredictable man. One mistake, one broken glass, one wrong breath, and you will be out on the street faster than you can blink."
"Yes, ma'am," Mara said quietly, taking the card.
She didn't feel special. She felt entirely terrified. Her father’s medical bills were piled on her kitchen counter at home, a mountain of debt that threatened to crush them both. She needed the premium pay that came with the penthouse assignment.
The service elevator ride felt agonizingly long. When the steel doors finally parted, the same two armed guards stood at attention in the walnut-paneled corridor. One of them, a broad-shouldered man named Leo, gave her a brief, uncharacteristic nod.
"He's been waiting," Leo murmured.
Mara pushed her heavy laundry cart down the quiet hallway. Her oversized, borrowed shoes squeaked slightly against the polished marble, a sound she cringed at with every single step. She entered the massive suite to find Rafe Cordell positioned by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the pitch-black Gulf of Mexico. The rain lashed against the reinforced glass. He didn't turn his wheelchair around, but he knew exactly who had entered.
"You were two minutes late," Rafe said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that sent a shiver down her spine.

"I'm sorry, sir. Mrs. Crane held me back to give me the new schedule."
"Mrs. Crane is an idiot," Rafe replied, finally spinning his chair around. His dark, calculating eyes locked onto hers. "I don't like new faces. I don't like people who break my things. You haven't broken anything yet. Get to work, Mara. And leave the book on the table exactly where I put it."
