Chapter 6 - A Poisoned Trap

Carmela walked over to the table and opened the velvet box. Inside lay a breathtaking vintage necklace—a thick platinum chain encrusted with deep blue sapphires.

“This was my mother’s,” Carmela said gently. “I want you to have it.”

“Mrs. Rossi, I can’t accept this,” I stammered, overwhelmed. “It’s worth a fortune!”

“It’s worth nothing compared to your loyalty,” Carmela insisted, locking the clasp around my neck.

Just then, the mansion’s internal alarm began to blare. Red emergency lights flashed along the hallways.

Dominic instantly stood up, drawing his firearm. “Stay behind me.”

Marco, his head of security, rushed into the room, his face pale.

“Boss! We have a problem!” Marco shouted. “The Police Commissioner is at the front gates with federal agents! They have a search warrant!”

“On what grounds?” Dominic demanded.

“Bianca Moretti just filed an official statement,” Marco revealed, glancing nervously at me. “She claims Skyler stole a five-million-dollar sapphire necklace from the Moretti vault last night—and that she attacked Bianca when she caught her red-handed!”

I gasped, my hand instinctively dropping to the necklace around my neck.

“It’s a frame-job!” I cried. “She’s trying to put me in prison!”

Dominic looked at the sapphire necklace, then at Marco. A dark, dangerous grin spread across his face.

“Bianca thinks she can play games in my house,” Dominic said softly. “She forgot about the conservatory cameras.”

“The cameras?” I asked, confused. “I thought Bianca said there were no cameras in the rose house.”

“There aren't,” Dominic chuckled darkly. “Iterated audio and thermal sensors were installed last month. Everything Bianca said—her threats to my mother, her admitting to striking you—is saved on a secure server.”

Dominic turned to Marco. “Let the Commissioner in. And call the press. It’s time we give New York a show.”
