Chapter 11 - Fire in the East Wing

My instinct was proven right less than twenty minutes after Dominic left the estate.
The power to the mansion suddenly cut out, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black darkness. Seconds later, the heavy thud of silenced gunshots echoed from the front gates.
“Skyler!” Carmela gasped, grabbing my arm in the dark hallway. “What’s happening?!”
“In the panic room! Now!” I shouted, pulling her toward the hidden steel door in the library.
Before we could reach the door, a heavy boot kicked open the glass patio doors of the conservatory.
Four men dressed in black tactical gear burst into the hallway, night-vision goggles strapped to their helmets. Behind them stepped Bianca Moretti, holding a silver handgun, her eyes wild with unhinged insanity.
“Find the old woman and the maid!” Bianca screamed to her men. “Kill the old hag, but bring me the maid alive! I’m going to cut that scar off her face myself!”
My blood ran cold.
I shoved Carmela into a small linen closet and locked it from the outside, slipping the key into my pocket.
“Stay quiet, Mrs. Rossi!” I whispered through the door.
I grabbed a heavy bronze statue from a side table and slipped into the shadows of the hallway.
A heavy footsteps approached my position. One of Bianca’s hitmen raised his rifle, searching the dark corridor.
As he passed my corner, I swung the heavy bronze statue with all my strength, slamming it directly into his throat. He gasped, dropping to his knees. I grabbed his fallen pistol, flipped the safety off, and fired two shots into his chest.

The gunshots echoed like thunder in the enclosed hallway.
“She’s over here!” Bianca screamed from the foyer. “Kill her!”
