Chapter 8 - Blood on the Cream Marble

|
Edward froze, his heart dropping into his stomach. The scream came from the grand foyer, right beneath the sweeping mahogany staircase.
He rounded the marble pillar, and the horrific scene unfolded before his eyes like a living nightmare.
Florence was sprawled across the polished cream marble floor. She was desperately clutching her silver-handled cane, her thin frame shaking violently as she sobbed in pain. Her hair was matted with sweat, her face bruised.
Standing over her was Victoria, wearing a striking emerald green dress. Victoria’s face was contorted into a monstrous, unrecognizable mask of rage. She held a thick stack of legal transfer documents in one hand and was aggressively striking the frail woman with the other.
"Give it to me, you old hag! Sign it or I swear you won't survive this day!" Victoria shrieked, raising her hand high to strike the weeping woman across the face once again.
The bouquet of wildflowers slipped from Edward's hand. Daisies and purple lavender scattered across the cold, white marble.
Time seemed to stop. The world narrowed down to the sight of his wife abusing his dying mother. A primal, explosive instinct took over Edward’s body.
"Get away from her!" Edward roared.
He charged forward with terrifying speed. Grabbing Victoria by her styled blonde hair, he violently yanked her backward with all his strength, breaking her hold on his mother.

Victoria spun around, her eyes wild and disoriented. "Edward—?!"
Before she could finish her sentence, Edward’s clenched fist connected squarely with her jaw. The sheer force of the impact snapped her head back, sending her crashing hard onto the marble floor.
