Chapter 14 - The Final Breath

|

The funeral of Florence Vance was small and solemn, attended only by close friends, long-time estate staff, and the shelter directors who had benefited from her generosity.

Edward stood beside the grave site in a black coat, holding the simple gold ring between his thumb and forefinger. The heavy rain soaked through his shoulders, but he barely felt it.

After the mourners cleared, Edward returned to the silent, empty mansion. The grand foyer felt different now—no longer a battleground, but a shrine to his mother’s memory.

He walked into his father’s old study, sitting at the large mahogany desk. He pulled the small velvet pouch out of his pocket and re-read his father’s handwritten note:

To my beloved son, Edward. If you are reading this, it means your mother has joined me. Remember that a house built on gold will crumble, but a home built on truth will stand forever. Look closely at what you hold.

Edward frowned, holding the gold ring up to the desk lamp.

Upon closer inspection, he noticed a tiny, microscopic seam running along the inside band of the ring. He took a small magnifying glass from the drawer and examined it.

Engraved inside the hidden inner band was a tiny set of numbers and a single word: Cellar-09.

Edward’s heart skipped a beat. His father hadn't just left him a sentimental token. He had left him a key.
