Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Hallway

Florence Vance sat at her antique writing desk, her frail hands trembling as she reviewed the thick stack of medical papers delivered by her private courier. The doctor’s words echoed in her mind like a solemn death knell: Advanced stage four carcinoma. Six months at best.
A soft knock at the door made her jump. She quickly slid the medical files into a leather folder and locked it inside her desk drawer.
"Come in," Florence said, smoothing her skirt.
Victoria stepped into the room holding a silver tray with a cup of chamomile tea. Her smile was disarmingly bright.
"Good morning, Mother Florence," Victoria said sweetly, placing the tray on the desk. "I had the kitchen prepare your favorite tea. You look a bit pale today."
"Thank you, Victoria," Florence replied guardedly. "I am simply feeling my age today."
Victoria’s eyes darted across the desk, lingering on the antique key ring Florence kept attached to her belt. That key ring held the passkey to the estate’s hidden wall safe behind the grand library portrait.
"You shouldn't strain yourself with paperwork," Victoria offered, taking a step closer to the desk. "Edward and I can handle the estate management. You should be resting, enjoying your golden years."
"The Vance estate has survived three generations because we stay vigilant," Florence answered firmly, looking her daughter-in-law dead in the eye. "My mind is as sharp as ever, Victoria."
Victoria’s jaw tightened slightly, though she maintained her pleasant smile. "Of course. I just worry about your health."

As Victoria left the room, closing the door quietly behind her, Florence let out a heavy sigh. She reached into her drawer, pulled out her personal seal, and began drafting a letter to her family attorney.
"I know what you are, Victoria," Florence murmured to herself, her eyes filled with sorrow. "And I will make sure my son is protected before I draw my last breath."
