Chapter 17 - A Secret Unlocked

|
With the trial officially concluded and Victoria behind bars, Edward returned to the quiet mansion to finish what his father had started.
He took a heavy flashlight and walked down into the dark, cobblestone wine cellar beneath the mansion. He navigated past the dusty racks of aged wine until he reached the far wall marked with an iron plate numbered 09.
Edward examined the iron plate. In the center was a small, round indentation—the exact size of his father’s gold ring.
He pressed the gold ring into the slot. A heavy mechanical click echoed through the damp cellar, and the cobblestone wall swung inward with a low, grinding groan, revealing a small, hidden room built into the foundation of the estate.
Edward stepped inside, shining his flashlight around the room.
The room contained no gold bars, no stacks of cash, and no priceless art. Instead, the walls were lined with thousands of framed photographs, journals, and records detailing thirty years of anonymous charitable work performed by his father and mother.
On a small wooden table in the center of the room sat a final ledger.

Edward opened it. It contained the names of over five hundred women and children whose lives had been saved and rebuilt through his parents' secret donations over the decades.
Tears welled in Edward’s eyes as he realized the true extent of his family’s legacy. They weren't just wealthy socialites hoarding money in a mansion—they were guardians of hope.
